The Challenge
Off-the-shelf CCTV equipment often falls short for traffic survey requirements. Existing products rely on time-lapse footage with poor image quality, making it nearly impossible to monitor critical details for example, the movements of mobility or visually impaired pedestrians at junctions. Additionally, these systems fail in poorly lit areas, restricting surveys to daylight hours.
For Obtrada, this wasn’t good enough. We needed a solution that:
Delivered high-quality footage for detailed analysis.
Performed reliably in low-light or unlit areas.
Was rapidly deployable, easy to use, and operable for prolonged periods.
The Solution
We developed an in-house HD CCTV recording system tailored specifically for our traffic surveys. This innovative solution combines durable, practical design with cutting-edge features:
Durability & Ease of Use:
Built using IP67-rated camera housings to protect against harsh environments.
Equipped with easy-to-use rocker switches with LED indicators for seamless operation, even when wearing gloves.
Secure pole-mounted installation with waterproof RJ45 sockets for quick roadside access and checks.
Unparalleled Flexibility:
Interchangeable camera heads, including PTZ (Pan, Tilt & Zoom) and wide-angle lenses, allow us to adapt to various survey requirements.
Built-in infrared (IR) ensures 24/7 performance, capturing data regardless of lighting conditions.
Efficient Power Management:
Powered by SLA rechargeable batteries with a lifespan of over 2,000 cycles.
Batteries can be recharged sustainably using solar panels at our base, minimizing waste and costs.
Extended power capabilities reduce site visits for battery changes, saving time and effort.
Implementation
Recently, we deployed this system for a 72-hour survey at a level crossing junction. The client required:
Classification of vehicle movements.
Counting pedestrian movements, including cyclists.
Analysis of barrier down times.
Our HD CCTV system was mounted on-site with a wide-angle lens, capturing the entire crossing without distortion. The system’s infrared capabilities ensured accurate data collection even during low-light conditions. Unlike traditional systems, we didn’t need to revisit the site for battery changes or data downloads, providing uninterrupted operation.

The Impact
Cost Savings: The client benefited from reduced logistics costs due to fewer site visits and streamlined data extraction processes.
Improved Data Quality: The high-resolution footage enabled precise analysis, with no loss of data caused by poor lighting or distorted images.
Sustainability: Rechargeable batteries and reduced site visits supported eco-friendly practices while cutting operational costs.
Future Potential
We’re continuously innovating. Our roadmap for this technology includes:
Integrating ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology for expanded survey capabilities.
Adding supplementary power packs and modems for remote equipment monitoring during prolonged surveys.
With its adaptability, reliability, and efficiency, our in-house HD CCTV system is becoming the go-to solution for many of Obtrada’s survey projects.
Conclusion
This case study showcases how Obtrada’s camera solution captures traffic movements, providing faster, more reliable, and cost-effective results. As we enhance our methods, we look forward to setting new benchmarks for efficiency and accuracy in the transport industry.
